A Baptism (also known as `Christening’) is the ceremony by which a person becomes a full member of the Christian Church. The declaration of faith is made by the person being baptised, or by parents and godparents on that person’s behalf. Please note that all godparents must themselves have been baptised.

There is no minimum or maximum age limit for baptism - anything between 0 and 100-plus ! Adult Baptisms are normally combined with Confirmation, following a period of instruction in the faith. We are always delighted to hear from anyone who may be considering this.

We are also very happy to conduct baptisms of infants, for those who live in the parish. We have an `open’ baptism policy (the decision is yours, not ours), but equally we take our responsibilities seriously to ensure that parents understand the commitment they are making. Sometimes, having thought about these issues, parents decide that it is more appropriate to have a Service of Thanksgiving for the birth of their child, rather than the full commitment of a baptism. Again, we can work with you on arranging this.

The first step in arranging a baptism or service of thanksgiving is to come to any 10am Sunday Service. After the service, please ask for a `Baptism Pack’. This explains things in more detail, and we will be happy to work with you, to move ahead in the way that is right for you.

  1. Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.
  2. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
  3. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
  4. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
  5. and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28 v16–20
